Once upon a time, two bear brothers named Changu and Mangu lived in a forest. They were real brothers. Changu’s fur was black, while Mangu’s was as white as snow. A hunter had once shot and killed their parents, so the two brothers now lived alone in a cave deep in the forest.
Changu was a gentle and patient bear. He remained happy in every situation. Mangu, however, was proud of his white color. He was greedy, selfish, and never content.

The two brothers roamed the forest, ate honey, caught fish, bathed in the river, and drank its clear, fresh water. Changu loved the forest and his home very much. He was intelligent and deeply attached to his homeland. Mangu, on the other hand, was careless and irresponsible. He never felt satisfied in the forest and had no love for his homeland.
Mangu dreamed of leaving the forest for the city, imagining delicious food, roasted meat, sweets, cakes, pastries, and fresh milk. Changu often advised him, “Brother, this is our forest. Here we are completely free—no one restricts us. We wake, eat, and go wherever we please. In the city, people will put us in cages. Greed is dangerous. Don’t leave!”
But greedy Mangu ignored his brother’s advice. Determined to go, he prepared to leave the forest for the city. Changu tried one last time to convince him, but Mangu, proud of his white fur, refused to listen and set off.
On his way, Mangu reached a farm owned by a farmer named Muhammad Ali. This was a sheep farm. Muhammad Ali raised healthy sheep, sheared their wool, and sold it in the city. When the flock grew large, he also sold some of the sheep. He gave them excellent food—sorghum, millet, and even sugarcane. The sheep lived happily, ate well, and were cared for lovingly. Whenever a sheep became ill, Muhammad Ali immediately called a veterinarian. His farm was well-kept, with beautiful, healthy sheep admired in the city. During Eid-ul-Adha, he sold strong, healthy rams in the market for good prices.
As Mangu approached the farm, a crow sitting nearby asked, “Brother Bear, why are you risking your homeland, your forest, and your freedom? Go back while there’s still time, or you will regret it!”
Mangu scoffed, “Go away, black crow! Stop your useless chatter. This whole earth belongs to Allah. What is homeland? The whole world is our homeland. I want to see the world. People in the city live in comfort. Don’t block my way. My brother is black, you’re black—none of you ever speak anything good!” And he marched on, imagining the wonderful life ahead.
Feeling thirsty, Mangu saw a pond near the farm. He bent down to drink. A frog popped up and said, “White Bear! Who are you and where have you come from? This pond is for the sheep. Go away! Don’t dirty the water. If the owner comes, he’ll beat you.”
Mangu made a face and said, “Who is he to beat me? Water falls from the sky by Allah’s command. Who dares stop me? I’ll tear him apart if he tries!”
Just then, a rooster appeared, puffed up and bold. “Leave at once!” the rooster crowed. “This farm belongs to my master. If he comes, he’ll kill you. Look, the guard dogs are on their way!”
“Dogs?” Mangu laughed. “Two or three or even four dogs can’t harm me. I’ll finish them one by one. Mind your own business!”
The rooster became angry and shouted loudly, “Catch him! Don’t let him escape!” The dogs heard the alarm and came barking furiously. There were four of them, circling and barking at the lone white bear from a distance. The commotion startled the sheep, who ran about in panic.
Muhammad Ali heard the noise, grabbed his stick, and rushed to the farmyard. Seeing the white bear, he called the villagers. “Catch him! Don’t let him escape!” The villagers surrounded Mangu and beat him with sticks and clubs. Someone phoned the city zoo, and the zoo staff arrived with a heavy iron cage. They threw a net over Mangu, captured him, and locked him inside. Soon he was transported and shut inside a zoo enclosure.
And so, the foolish bear lost his freedom because of greed. Truly, greed is a terrible curse.
Moral Lesson
This story teaches us that greed and pride can lead to the loss of freedom and peace. Changu was happy in the forest because he valued his home and lived with patience. Mangu, blinded by pride and tempted by city luxuries, ignored all advice and was finally trapped. We learn that real happiness is found in contentment, gratitude, and listening to wise counsel.
